How to Turn the User Account Control (UAC) Feature On or Off

The User Account Control (UAC) is a feature of the Vista and Windows 7 operating systems that improves computer safety and security by preventing potentially dangerous software from making changes to the computer without explicit user consent, which in turn can help reduce the affect of viruses, spyware, and other threats.

IMPORTANT: It is recommended that the User Account Control (UAC) setting not be disabled if at all possible. Lowering the UAC setting can reduce the computer security level and make it more susceptible to security exploits. If the UAC setting does need to be lowered for some reason, be sure to return the UAC setting back to at least the default level as soon as possible.

NOTE: By default, the operating system is configured with the User Account Control (UAC) level set to the second highest setting possible.


How to open the Cookies folder in Windows 7 and Windows Vista

In previous versions of the Windows operating systems, you could actually browse to and view or manipulate the content of the Cookies folder. In the Windows Vista operating system, you can see the Cookies folder by clicking Start, and in the Start Search field, typing cookies. But if you then attempt to open the Cookies folder by either clicking on it or pressing the Enter key, an Access is denied error will be displayed. This is because the Cookies folder is not really there. What is there is a pointer that instructs the operating system where the actual Cookies folder can be found. The operating system does this to add a level of security to that folder.

The Windows 7 operating system has taken this level of security one step further by not listing the Cookies folder at all when searched.


How to remove the logon prompt when accessing Network Resources in Windows.

When trying to access Network resources, such as files, folders or Drives on another Computer over a Home Network, you may be prompted for a username and password.

You must enter the username and password of a password-protected user account that exists on the Computer you are trying to access. If you do not want to use a user account that is already set up, create a password-protected user account specifically for the Network logon.


How to enable or disable the password protected sharing feature in Windows 7.

Follow this procedure to configure the password protected sharing feature in the Windows 7 Operating System:

1.    Click the Start button, and then click Control Panel.

2.    In the Control Panel window, under Network and Internet , click Choose homegroup and sharing options.
 
3.    In the HomeGroup window, click Change advance sharing settings.
 
4.    In the Advance sharing settings window, under Public (current profile), scroll to the bottom of the window, click to turn ON or turn OFF the password protected sharing feature, and then click the Save changes button.
 
IMPORTANT: To ensure that the content below the Public (current profile) heading is visible, click the down arrow button.

1.    Click the Start button and then click Control Panel .
2.    In the Control Panel window, click Network and Internet .
3.    In the Network and Internet window, click Network and Sharing Center .
4.    In the Network and Sharing Center window, in the Sharing and Discovery section, click the down-arrow button next to Password protected sharing to expand the selection.
