What are the computer requirements needed to run the Windows Aero user interface

A computer will need to meet the following requirements in order to be able to run the Windows Aero feature:

  • The Windows 7 Enterprise, Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate operating system.
  • 1-GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
  • 1 gigabyte (GB) of random access memory (RAM)
  • 128 megabytes (MB) graphics card with a DirectX 9 class graphics processor that supports a Windows Display Driver Model Driver, Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware, and 32 bits per pixel.

The graphics card specifications above are the minimum requirements. For best results, consider these graphics processor recommendations as well:

  • 128 MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor with a resolution from 1,310,720 to 2,304,000 pixels (for example, a 21.1 inch flat panel LCD monitor that has up to a 1600x1200 resolution)
  • 256 MB of graphics memory to support a single monitor with a resolution greater than 2,304,000 pixels (for example, a 30 inch wide-screen flat panel LCD monitor that has up to a 2560x1600 resolution)

Additional information about Aero:

  • Aero is not included in the Windows 7 Basic or Started editions of the operating system.
  • In order to operate with full functionality, the Aero feature requires a Windows Experience Index (WEI) score of 2 or greater.
  • If the computer is having problems running the Aero feature, you can use the Aero troubleshooter to help identify and fix the issue.
  • To find out which edition of the Windows 7 operating system is installed on your computer, click the Start button, click Control Panel, click System and Security, and then click System. Details about the installed operating system information will be displayed near the top of the System window.

I suggest that you run the Windows Experience Index (WEI) and check if the score is 2 or greater. If it's less, you may have to upgrade the Computer or buy a new one.
